5 Abstract Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is considered world's fourth most paramount cereal crop after rice, wheat and maize and it nearly 30% of the world's total cereal production. It is grown in many areas where climatic conditions are unfavourable. It is an important crop with these principal reasons: Versatile eco-agro adaptability, its uses as medicine and food for human being, utility as feed cum fodder for cattle as well as for birds also. It has continued to be paramount crop in many countries due to three reasons: broad adaptation, utility as feedstock and for human food, and superior properties of barley malt for brewing. Barley is not only an economically important crop, but also considerd a model species(a taxonomic category subordinate to a genus (or subgenus) and superior to a subspecies or variety; composed of individuals similar in certain morphologic and physiologic characteristics) for genetic(The scientific study of heredity) and physiological(a branch of biology that deals with the functions and activities of life or of living matter) studies. This crop is used as food for human and as a fodder for animals. In India, barley is an important Rabi cereal in the northern plains comprising the states of UP, MP, Haryana, Rajastan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Utarakhand. Its low input demand and lower cost of cultivation are important factor for its preference by farmers, especially marginal and poor farmers of these areas. It is estimated that about 85% of the world's barley production is destined for feeding animals, while the rest is used for malt/seed production and food consumption. In some countries, viz., Morocco, India, China and Ethiopia, barley is used as an important food crop in daily diets while in Japan it used as green tea. Another use in the form of Chapati, Suttoo and eaten as traditional meal both by the economically deprived as well middle class populations of few states of India. Apart from above it is also familiar for traditional medicines and used to cure the human diseases.
